Further on lies Garrykennedy, Mountshannon and Scarriff. In between is Holy Island (or Iniscealtra), evoking memories of early Irish Christianity. Killaloe, site of the restored 13th century St.Flannan’s Cathedral and surrounded by the legends of ancient kings, hermits and heroes, has a 13-arched bridge and a modern marina that’s popular with boat-users.
This cruise can also be done as a 3-4 day short break – just reduce the time spent visiting the area according to your preferences.
Terryglass is a charming village which has won numerous tidy towns awards and has been described as Ireland's "most absurdly beautiful small village". It is a great place to relax and unwind. The harbour at Terryglass is quite small and lends itself to a friendly, sociable atmosphere. A short walk up the hill will bring you to the village itself which has a craft centre, shop and two pubs - which are both renowned for good food, music and craic.
Mountshannon is a beautiful and scenic village. It was designed as a model village and completed in 1742. It's tree lined streets and the uniformity of its architecture give it a grace and dignity seldom seen in villages of comparable size. The harbour is attractively landscaped and includes picnic tables and a toilet and shower block. Fishing is very good on the lake and a broad range of species can be caught. There are several angling supply shops locally and bait can be bought in Mountshannon itself. The backdrop of the Sliabh Aughty mountains provides a beautiful place to go hiking or for a long cycle. In recent years a series of different walks have been marked out in the area.
Scariff offers a wide range of shops, supermarkets, newsagents, bars, restaurants, a pharmacy, bank, post office and other amenities.
Killaloe is the southernmost town on Lough Derg and is steeped in history, and is separated from its 'twin' town of Ballina by a beautiful arched bridge which spans the river to join these two towns. Killaloe, on the left bank, in County Clare is a network of charming narrow streets, flanked by old shops and houses, that climb up the steep hillside and look down over the 13th century cathedral. The buildings of Ballina, in North Tipperary line the roadway that runs parallel to the river.
